Baigents Pty Ltd were the primary structural steel shop detailer on the $220 million project. The building works for the project were estimated to be approximately $45 million.

Baigents detailed over 700 tonne of the 1000 tonne of structural steelwork making up the project. Baigents detailed the structural steelwork for the main press hall consisting of 100 metres long and five storeys high, reception area and main canopy structure.

The Age Print Centre was a very complex and unique structure to shop detail which push Baigents Pty Ltd to new frontiers in regard to shop detailing. All areas of the landmark project involved complexities in both plan and elevation with the roof torus’, the asymmetric columns and the canopy structures. The demanding project took approximately 12 months to shop detail the steelwork.

The detailing of the main roof the covers the post press area needed to be detailed to a tolerance of 20mm over a 90 metre distance to enable connection of the roof steelwork to an insitu concrete structure.

Baigents Pty Ltd actively participated with consultants and fabricators throughout the course of the project with consultants and fabricators to reach more economical and simplistic solutions to detailing issues. In many instances Baigents Pty Ltd put forward alternative connection details to the consultants to increase the simplicity and to aid in the fabrication and erection process.

Baigents also won the Victorian AISC Steel Construction award for excellence in shop detailing drawings for structural steelwork.
