WSL Synthetic Rutile Plant

Iluka Resources (formerly Westralian Sands Ltd), as part of a major expansion to its existing production facilities, have constructed a new synthetic rutile plant which more than doubles production capacity. The cost of the new plant was valued at over $80 million. Baigents Pty Ltd were involved initially in the cost estimating for civil, structural and building components of the plant. In the preparation of the final engineering documentation we prepared engineering drawings and specifications for the civil, structural and building works. Approximately 30 building or structures were involved and included the following:

  • 90m long rotary kiln and 60m long rotary cooler
  • Kiln inlet station
  • Kiln/cooler transfer building
  • Cooler outlet building
  • Materials separation and bin building
  • Aeration building
  • Hydrocycloning and leaching building
  • Reduced illmenite building
  • Product loadout
  • Control rooms, substations, etc.
  • Conveyors, piperacks, stacks, etc.

Baigents Pty Ltd were also responsible for the preparation of shop detail drawings of various components of the plant.
