Burton Coal Upgrade

The coal processing plant expansion involved the upgrade and new materials handling systems. The works involved two (2) sites, Burton and Mallawa, which are 40km apart. Baigents Pty Ltd, were the overall designers of the project and were responsible for the civil, structural and mechanical design of the materials handling plant.

The main components of the Mallawa site involved the following:-

  • New triple-tray side-dump coal truck approach ring road
  • Reinforced earth wall
  • Stormwater drainage
  • Two 150t capacity twin chute dump hoppers
  • Four off Reclaim feeders
  • Over-stockpile sky conveyor
  • Extension of the existing reclaim conveyor and tunnel, including pile dischargers
  • Upgrade the throughput capacity from 2 million to 5 million tonnes per annum

The main components of the Burton site involved the following:-

  • Upgrade of the ROM dump hopper facility
  • Upgrade of three (3) delivery conveyors from 850 to 1000tph
  • Modifications to the main distribution bin by the addition of two discharge feeders
  • Modify the existing and provide new delivery conveyors for the two (2) CPP’s
  • New product collection conveyor
  • New truck outloading system incorporating a 700 tonne product bin

Baigents Pty Ltd produced all detail drawings which ran concurrently with the structural and mechanical designs. We were involved in the vendor review process and recommended the technically preferred suppliers. Our personnel also undertook site work to assist our client, Thiess Contractors.
